|The Mage Sister||
Hello, Thor! Thank you for talking with us today. How are you?
Thor I’m in the very pink, thank you. And yourself?
I’m well, thanks! So how long have you been with the Circle of Mages?
Thor Been here ‘bout… hmmm, I remember Cullen and Nathan crossing not too long after I did, so it’d be a bit more‘n… six hundred years or so, I reckon.
That’s a very long time. How long have you been married to Hilien?
Thor Ah, me litt’l angel! We’ve been happily married for round about two hundred year.
The other fella’s wonder how you’ve made such a successful marriage.
Thor Well, I know they don’t appreciate my Hili the way I do, but they don’t know her the way I do either. She’s just feisty, is all, and they don’t get her sense of humor.
She’s trying to be funny?
Thor What else? To assume otherwise would be uncharitable.
Sure. Okay. What is your role in the Circle?
Thor I’m a knower.
Is that like a seer?
Thor If you like. It’s sort of a combination of seeing and truth-saying. Not the most powerful of them, me, and I don’t really like doin’ it to be honest. Knowing is a terrible burden sometimes. So mostly, I do heavy liftin’ around the Keep, building and whatnot. They don’t often have a call for my skill, seeing as how there’s plenty of knowers better than I am.
Well, it’s good that you have something to keep you busy.
Thor Right! There’s always something to do around the Keep, so I don’t much get bored. And then, they do take me on quests and such like, because I can see ahead and know if there’s trouble coming, and warn them. Plus, I’m pretty good in a scrap.
I’ll bet you are! You’re quite impressive in stature.
I didn’t mean to insult you.
Thor S’alright. I know I’m a big oaf. But where I come from, we’re all big like me.
Tell me about your life before the Circle. Where do you come from?
Thor A place called Riyh. It’s a small village up in the western end of the Betreachen Mountain range, where my people settled. I don’t know if we was always big, or if we just grew that way, but there’s few shorter than three and a half arm lengths, and that’d be the petite girls.
Wow! How did that happen?
Thor Dunno. But we’re all that way. Cullen says it’s likely in the bloodline, but we always says it’s somethin’ in the water. Anyways, it’s a good place.
You were happy there?
Thor Oh sure! Had me a big ol’ family. Brothers all! Me mum and dad were good folk, and the village is very close knit. I still go there from time to time, and they always remember me, even though all my kin I knew are gone. ***sniff***
That makes you sad, doesn’t it?
Thor Nothin’ I can do about it. ***snuffle***
Nathan Thor, you big girl! Quit crying!
Thor I’m not cryin’. It’s me allergies!
Nathan, shush and go away. So anyway, you must have a lot of happy memories. Was your family upset when you were maged?
Thor Yeah, they were pretty tore up about it. My brothers wanted to find the critter and pound it flat, but I’d already done it.
So why did they send you to the Circle of Mages?
Thor The village decided it would be best. Tore me mum’s heart out, but they thought the Circle’d be able to teach me how to deal with meself. And they did.
Your family must have missed you terribly.
Thor They did, but I was let to visit them as much as I wanted. I could’a gone home, but in the end, I realized it was for the best to stay with the Circle.
Why was that?
Thor I missed my family more and more, even when I was with them. They grew old, as I stayed young. We grew farther and farther apart, so I was pleased enough with just visits. ‘Course, the Circle became my new family, so I couldn’t be happier, really.
Being so enormous, how do you function in a world designed for smaller folk.
What is your experience with your size versus the size of everything else?
Thor Sorry, what?
Nathan What’s it like being a big oaf surrounded by little people and little people stuff?
Nathan! Don’t be rude!
Nathan I’m sorry, but you have to be a lot more direct with him.
Just… shoo! Go away!
Thor He’s right you know. I’m not the most brilliant of the lot here. Not stupid, mind, but I’m made of simpler stuff. I don’t mind! It’s just the way I am. Like or lump it.
That’s a very good attitude to have. Back to my question, do you find it hard to be so big?
Thor Well, mages tend to be taller than a lot of folk in the first place – has to do with the magickers blood in them. Cullen could explain that to you better, I don’t begin to understand it all. But here at the Keep, it’s not really that hard.
Thor Mage craft is good strong stuff to begin with, so it’s rare that I actually break anything here. Out in the world, though, it can be a bit rough. Doors can be hard to get through, I sit and sleep on the floor because I tend to break furnishings, I have to just tip food into me mouth because spoons are so tiny I’d starve before I could eat a meal with one. So folks think I got no manners, but in truth, I find it well nigh impossible to use their tiny dishes. They’re like the toys like me nieces used to play with. I like Rowan Castle, though, because it’s made big! And Nathan’s not a littl’un, so his furnishings are nice and sturdy. I never have to sit on the floor there.
That’s good! I think Catherine would be mortified if you did.
Thor She'sa good lady, is our Catherine. She knows what bein’ a queen’s about.
Well, thanks again for talking with us today, Thor! It’s been a pleasure!
Thor Many thanks to you!
